Richard Demarco becomes chairman of the Fine Furniture Guild
Professor Richard Demarco OBE has agreed to be the first honorary chairman of the Fine Furniture Guild.
Professor Demarco is one of the UK’s leading arts commentators, who is himself an artist and one of the most influential advocates for contemporary art.
He is also a staunch advocate of the Chippendale International School of Furniture and each year awards a prize in his name to an outstanding student.
His contributions to contemporary art internationally have been recognised on numerous occasions, receiving the Polish Gold Order of Merit, the Cavaliere della Republica d’Italia, and the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres de France.
He has been one of Scotland’s most influential artistic figures for many years through his work at the Richard Demarco Gallery and the Demarco European Art Foundation, as well as his professorship at Kingston University in London.
His appointment recognises the importance of furniture design within the Chippendale school’s curriculum and how artistic vision is an important element in creating furniture that is valued across generations.
“Richard Demarco has been a good friend to the school and we are delighted that he has agreed to become the Guild’s first honorary president,” said Anselm Fraser, school principal.
“His contribution to the arts has been immense and we are looking forward to Richard bringing his enormous experience to the Fine Furniture Guild,” he said.
